Volt Energy Completes Downtown Winston Salem's First Solar Energy Project
Winston-Salem, NC – Volt Energy announced today that it has completed the first solar energy project located in downtown Winston-Salem. The 10kw solar panel-powered system is part of a state-wide initiative to encourage the generation of energy through clean, alternative energy sources.
The rooftop system is located at 224 Town Run Lane at the office of ophthalmologist Dr. David Branch, who is also a partner in Volt Energy.
“This is an exciting new technology that is now financially viable for businesses of any size,” Dr. Branch says. “Through the use of tax credits and the sale of the power this system generates, we will be able to recover the cost of this installation in a very short time frame.”
According to Volt Energy Partner Gilbert Campbell, solar projects such as the one in Downtown Winston-Salem have the ability to transform existing roof space into profit centers for companies. Companies then have the option to use the power generated for their own businesses or sell it to energy companies such as Duke Energy, which feed it back into their grids for resale to other customers.
Campbell also says that another important factor helping to make solar energy more feasible is the green energy production incentive program sponsored by North Carolina GreenPower. This not-for-profit organization pays solar energy producers for sending green energy back to the electric grid as part of its efforts to promote and accelerate North Carolina’s adoption of clean energy.
“Solar panels have a low profile that can make them virtually invisible from the street level,” says Volt Energy Partner Antonio Francis. “Our approach is to evaluate our clients’ energy needs, goals and available resources to configure the optimal technology and system size."
Francis says that companies also can monitor the efficiency and energy output of their system in real time to measure the amount of clean energy produced.
Winston-Salem Mayor Allen Joines will be recognizing Volt Energy and Dr. Branch on Friday, April 23, at 10 a.m. for installing the first solar project in downtown.
“This type of project is critical to the City of Winston-Salem in our efforts to reduce our carbon footprint and meet the reduction goals we have set as a community,” Joines says. “In particular, this project demonstrates the advantages for companies to develop alternative energy projects because it makes sense financially and environmentally.”
The Downtown Winston-Salem solar energy project is the first in the Triad for Volt Energy, an early stage renewable energy firm. The company is currently developing projects for commercial institutional and government entities in North Carolina, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.
