Florida Avenue Baptist Church and Volt Energy Embark On Landmark Solar Project In Washington, DC
Florida Avenue Baptist Church will become the first African American church in Washington, DC to install solar energy
January 20, 2011 -- Florida Avenue Baptist Church, Volt Energy and LeDroit Park Energy, LLC announced today the signing of an agreement to install a solar energy power system. The 10 KW system will be installed on the roof of the Florida Avenue Baptist Church located at 623 Florida Avenue NW. The church will purchase the solar electricity generated at a lower cost than what it is currently paying for electricity through a Power Purchase Agreement with LeDroit Park Energy, LLC.
Rev. Dr Earl D. Trent Jr., pastor of the Florida Avenue Baptist Church stated, “Care for God’s creation is one of the tenants of our faith. It is fitting that we step into the age of clean renewable energy. Once installed, we will begin workshops on how members can make their homes more energy efficient and further develop a Green Ministry.” Pastor Trent further noted “We are the first African American church in the District to install a solar power system and see this as a viable model for other churches to reduce their carbon footprint and their electric bill.”
Gilbert G. Campbell III, co-owner of Volt Energy stated, “Volt Energy is proud to play a part in this historic project. This church is a pillar in the D.C. community and this project will not only reduce their energy costs but also serve as an educational model for church members and the surrounding community to learn more about the benefits of alternative energy.”
The preliminary design work has already been completed and installation is slated to be completed in 8 weeks. At that time a public opening will be held.

Le Droit Park Energy, LLC is a private member limited liability company formed by member investors of the Florida Ave Baptist Church and will own and operate the solar system.
